Instead of working to provide food on the table for their children and, providing them a healthy and safe environment, Rex and Rosemary Walls were careless and only worried about what they wanted to do in life. Without having responsible parents, these children had to mature faster than normal children to provide for themselves. Although foster care is seen as an alternative care for parents who are having issues or care for their children, I think that the Walls children in The Glass Castle would have lived a better life if they were cared for and nurtured in a foster home where they could be happy and worry free, rather than having to live with careless parents and having to learn to provide for themselves at young ages.

The foster care system is designed to protect a child when they are not being protected in the familial home. The child is removed from their biological home and placed in a temporary home, where they are fostered until they turn eighteen or are able to return to their home. Reunification with the parent is the ultimate goal of foster care and when this is no longer an option, adoption for the child becomes the goal.
