Analysing a water shortage event can give us some useful information on how to plan for, deal with and possibly reduce the likelihood of a similar event in the future. It can also help us plan for, and be aware of a number of other important water issues … especially water quantity related issues. Population increase, which led to water demand increases, was also a factor, along with the possibility that a changing climate and changing weather patterns had something to do with the drought event. Dam levels had been decreasing since , but reached their peak crisis level in mid to mid where water levels hovered between 15 to 30 per cent of total dam capacity. A few of the significant effects of the shortage were water restrictions to the municipal supply of water, residents having to significantly decrease their daily water usage, and agriculture and businesses also decreasing their daily water usage.

A drought can last for months or years, or may be declared after as few as 15 days. Periods of heat can significantly worsen drought conditions by hastening evaporation of water vapour.
This drought has happened due to the worst rainfall of last years in Tamil Nadu. The rain bringing season of Northeast monsoon had left the farmers subdued with little rainfall. The drought had caused many farmer head of households to commit suicide. The Northeast monsoon season had subdued Tamil Nadu with the worse rainfall ever, just scattering rain in some areas.
